Most Reverend Henry Gabriels
Second Bishop of Ogdensburg
(1892-1921)
Central to the coat of arms of Bishop Henry Gabriels, second bishop of Ogdensburg, is his motto, IN VIRTUTE DEI, “IN THE STRENGTH OF GOD.” This is the meaning of the Hebrew name 'Gabriel' , “IN THE STRENGTH OF GOD.”
Beneath the motto is the symbol of the right arm of the Angel Gabriel, holding a lily, the sign of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Above the motto is a sealed book on which sits the Lamb of God holding the cross of victory. This recalls Gabriel’s message concerning the Redeemer of Whom Isaiah wrote, “He shall be led as a sheep to the slaughter and shall not open his mouth.”
The green pontifical hat, the gallero, with its six tassels arranged in three rows on either side of the shield, and the bishop’s miter, crosier, and processional cross indicated the prelate’s rank.
