Most Reverend Walter Philip Kellenburg
Sixth Bishop of Ogdensburg
(1954-1957)
Most Reverend Walter Philip Kellenburg, sixth bishop of Ogdensburg, chose the motto, REGINA VERTE LUMINA, “QUEEN GUIDE ME BY THY LIGHT,” from the First Vespers of the Office for the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The green gallero, with six tassels arranged in three rows on either side of the shield, and the miter, crosier, and processional cross symbolize the bishop’s rank.
The dexter impalement of the See of Ogdensburg includes a blue background, the silver Fort La Presentation, and golden oak leaves of the family of Samuel Ogden (oak dene).
On the right hand side of the shield is the blue star on a silver field, honoring Mary, the Morning Star.
The mountain, or berg, recalls the bishop’s German heritage, while the two ears of corn signify his mother’s family, Kern.
Three ermine crosses commemorate Bishop Kellenburg’s service to Cardinal Spellman and the green background, his eighteen years at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.
